Bored Ape Yacht Club creators Yugalabs buys CryptoPunks and Meebits IP’s Right, Larva-Labs until this acquisition handled every merchandising around the CryptoPunks and Meebits Collections.
The most interesting aspect of this mega deal is the granting of exclusive Commercial Rights to CryptoPunks and Meebits Holders, granting of full Commercial rights was a good move. But then I thought more about it, What is the utility of the IP if individual owners can’t exercise them properly, Over the last year we've seen a lot of complains about the fact Punks had none. So it's only fair to think that those paying for them would want to be absolute owners, We see how BAYC became what it is today, It was because of the expansions through IP.
I'm curious if this becomes a disincentive for projects to release IP to their collectors, Without the IP - Larva Labs wouldn't have anything to "sell" except the future royalty cashflows. Projects may want to withhold the IP in partial/whole to try and realise a future buy-out.
Seems like the space might steer towards into similar steps that the gaming industry went through. EA or Activision buying X studio then MS or Sony buying them, etc. Yuga have proven themselves, I think it will be a good deal for the whole space, just hope Yuga don't keep buying up other projects, we need variation too.
